June 2009
The recent downturn in the economy and inevitable slide into recession has increasingly focussed clients' attention toward the most cost effective or best value option for creating new lawns, sports surfaces and amenity areas.
As the cost of all our materials and overheads have risen considerably during 2008 we have taken a careful look at all our chosen suppliers, equipment and working methods to ensure continued efficiency and value for money.
For our grass seeds mixtures, turf, fertiliser, soil conditioners, planting sundries etc. we continue to source from industry specialists who offer quality products and what we consider to be the best value choice for our customers.
Despite a slowing down in the property market we have worked on many new and existing homes during the early part of 2009, a mixture of grass seeding, turf laying and planting works for domestic clients, local builders and commercial developers.
In mid March we spent a week working at Oxford Brookes University campus turf laying around two new lecture units as part of a long term redevelopment programme on the site.
At the end of March 09 we began one of the largest projects we have undertaken in recent years, formation of a new sports pitch at HMP Featherstone near Wolverhampton. The USGA spec root-zone constructed pitch was turfed with a total of 9200 m2 Big Roll turf using Big roll laying equipment. Specialist equipment was also necessary for preparing the pitch surface prior to turf laying. This included a Toro Sand Pro and attachments. This particular type of construction is one we are very familiar with and goes back to the origins of the business, turf laying on USGA spec golf courses in the early 1990’s.
A further 10800 m2 of seeding works were completed around the perimeter of the pitch and changing room facility as well as outside the new prison security fence.
Since the site-saved soil was very stony our Rotadairon stone burriers were certainly put through their paces when preparing the soil before seeding works.
We have been maintaining this facility cutting the pitch and newly seeded areas until June 11 2009, the hand over date.
2006 Review : 15 Years in Business
July 2006 marked the Anniversary of 15 years trading
for Links Turf Layers. The core business remains specialist grass
seeding and turf laying services for all natural sports and amenity
areas.
As with all previous years, there was a diverse
mix including domestic lawns, property developments, and sports
fields as well as reinstatement work at schools, prisons and commercial
sites.
With extremes of dry or wet weather and high temperatures
it has probably been our most challenging year yet.
Over the 12 months we were involved with property
developments across the 3 Counties, with new homes at Louth, Lincoln,
Newark, Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Tetney, Scunthorpe, Gunness, Market
Rasen and many villages in- between.
School sportsfields in Brigg and Essex also formed
a large part of our work as well as the re-seeding of Barton Town
F.C.s main pitch.
Nearing the end of the year, the emphasis turned
to tree and shrub planting, allowing us the opportunity to complete
3 development sites where we had been seeding or turfing new lawns
earlier.
The order book was already filling for 2007!
